National Livestock Development Board gears up for coconut cultivation modernization and development
• Monitoring and management of coconut cultivation using artificial intelligence.

The National Livestock Development Board, which combines agriculture with animal husbandry in fertile farmlands spread across many areas of Sri Lanka, has been transforming coconut cultivation in its farmlands from traditional agriculture to the use of the latest technology.
As a step in this, steps have been taken to introduce an application that combines artificial intelligence and drone technology to monitor the coconut cultivation spread over 11,000 acres of coconut owned by the National Livestock Development Board, collect smooth data on the cultivation, monitor and predict. Through this, the Board aims to make accurate and timely decisions based on faster and more accurate data by focusing on Smart Agriculture, and through this, the Board hopes to increase the productivity of current coconut cultivation by managing the inputs required for coconut cultivation.
The commencement of the application of fertilizer to 150,000 coconut trees during the peak season and the planting of another 50,000 coconut trees during the 2025/2026 period for the modernization and development of “coconut” or coconut cultivation, which has added unique value in the current market, was marked at the Board’s Andigama farm on 29 October 2025 under the patronage of the Hon. Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation, Mr. Namal Karunaratne. The Additional Secretary (Livestock Development) of the Ministry, Dr. Palika Fernando, Member of Parliament Dr. Jagath Gunawardena and the Honorable Chairman of the National Livestock Development Board, Dr. B.S.C. Perera, Deputy Chairman Dr. W. M. D. S. Wanninayake, members of the Board of Directors, General Manager Dr. K.G.J.S. Disnaka and a group of others were present on this occasion. The aim of the Board is to contribute to the national economy through the sustainable development of the Board's farms.
